BRITISH MEDICAL SPECIALISTS EXPECT SMALLER INCOMES
LONDON, August G The incomes of many leading medical specialists are expected to be reduced considerably by the introduction of the Ministry of Health scale of fees under the national health service. Physicians are limited to £5 5s for a first consultation and a total fee of £26 5s for any one case. The maximum fee a surgeon can charge for any one major operation is £52 10s, and for any intermediate or minor operation £26 5s and £lO 10s respectively. If the total fees payable to any specialist by a single patient exceeds £7B 15s the charges must be scaled down. Patients who are able to pay higher fees may do so by arrangement with the specialists, but it is laid down that only 15 per cent of the beds in hospitals can be used by patients paying fees above the ordinary scale.
