Boy Runs 100 Yards in 9.6 Seconds

NEW YORK, June 1

An 18-year-old high school boy, Jim Field, surprised athletic experts at the New Jersey central schoolboy championships by running the 100 yards in 9.6 sec within a month after his first race on cinders. His earlier experience had been on indoor board ■tracks, on which he put up good times. . I At the New Jersey meeting, four officials timed him at 9.6 sec and one at 9.ssec. He also did the 220 yards in 21.4 sec. He will compete in the national championships next month.
