Appeal for Children Committee it was reported that the sum of £250 had been received to date. A systematic canvass of the whole district had been carried out and, with very few exceptions the people have responded willingly. Rev. L. Collins reported that Otira residents were giving whole-hearted support, many promising a second donation. Dances and other functions were also being organised by the local committee, and the ladies of the Otira Railway refreshment rooms staff to further augment the funds which when totalled will be in the vicinity of .£BO or more.
£140,000 SO FAR REPORTED
P.A. WELLINGTON, June 1. Gifts totalling £140,000 have been reported to the Dominion headquarters of the United Nations Appeal for Children, said the chairman of the appeal executive, Mr C. S. Falconer, tonight. Last Friday the total was £lOO,OOO. The executive was very satisfied with the result so far. Mr Falconer emphasised that the figure given did not take into account many districts whose Mayors were holding back funds till they had a high total to report. Though they had not yet reported, rural districts were known to have responded to the appeal particularly well.
