WATAROA NOTES
[ Our own Correspondent] WATAROA, June 1. The week-end in South Westland was extremely wet ,and all outdoo. fixtures had to be postponed. Many • settlers from Wataroa attended a social evening given by Mrs John O’Neil in honour of the coming of age of her daughter, Peggie. The evening was spent in songs and dancing, and a fine supper was provided by Mrs O’Neil and helpers. Mrs Grahanp, of Franz Josef, was a visitor for the week-end. Mr Jack Pethig, of Rot’s, visited Wataroa, accompanied by Mrs Pethig. A very fine . class of white pine log for the chopping events at the Wataroa sports on Saturday is arriving from the Fox Glacier district. Numerous nominations have been received for all events, and a successful meeting is assured. Early next month, an improved road service is to come into operation in South Westland. This news will be well received in the district. Mr James Mcßride, who visited Hokitika during the week, has returned Mr William Ritchie, of Koiterangi. who has been holidaying here, is returning home Mr Charles O’Rourke, q, former well-known chopper, is expected to attend the Wataroa sports meeting and he is assured of a warm welcome,. Mr and Mrs F. Pamment were visitors to Greymouth for the races. A very large congregation attended at the Church of Our Lady of the Fields, on the feast of Corpus Christi when the Rev. Father O’Gorman was the preacher of an impressive sermon.
