DEFEAT OF THE SMUTS GOVERNMENT

LONDON, May 31. A Times correspondent at Capetown said: “It is possible to construe the victory of Dr Malan’s South African Nationalist Party as an Afrikander vote of non-confidence in the DeputyPremier (Mr Jan Hofmeyr) because the Nationalists during the campaign put him up as a symbol of that liberalism towards the natives which the Afrikanders must unite to defeat. An unfortunate aspect of the election results is that there is not a single English member in the Nationalist or the Afrikander party. It is mainly the Afrikaans-speaking countryside that elected the Nationalists, and it is mainly the English-speaking coastal towns which returned United Party members. This division will make it fatally easy for normal political controversy to become racial controversy, with sinister possibilities for the future”.
