DR. DALTON REPLACES LORD NATHAN IN BRITISH CABINET
LONDON, May 31. The Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, anr nounced that Dr Hugh Dalton has returned to the Cabinet as Chancellor oi the Duchy of Lancaster. Lord Pakenham has relinquished this post to become Minister of Civil Aviation tollowing Lord Nathan’s resignation. The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster normally receives a salary of £3OOO yearly, but as Dr Dalton will be a member of the Cabinet he will receive £5OOO. Dr Dalton resigned from the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer following the disclosure of British information, Mr Attlee has not yet selected tlfc duties for Dr Dalton, but the Prime Minister has decided that the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster should no longer carry the special responsibility for German affairs. The announcement or Dr Dalton’s return will give the greatest satisfaction to Labour Parliamentarians, among whom there is a strong feeling that his talents should no longer be wy.st.eci Lord Nathan, in a letter announcing his resignation, said it was essential for him to return to his work as a solicitor because of his senior partner’s poor health. DALTON’SPLACE MAY BE IN FORM POLICY Comment on Cabinet Selection (Rec. 9.0). LONDON, June 1. Dr Hugh Dalton’s duties are officially defined as assisting in the work of the Cabinet generally. He will also be available to undertake any special duties required by the Prime Minister, but it is emphasised that no alteration will be made in the present arrangements for the co-ordination of economic affairs, which will continue to be handled by Sir Stafford Cripps. This means, as the Financial Times points out, that although Dr Dalton will now return to the Cabinet, the dual control of economic policy, which existed prior to his resignation last November, will not be restored. It is not even certain, the paper adds, whether the duties that are likely «to be allotted to him will be primarily within the economic sphere. Dr Dalton had recently shown more interest in foreign affairs than in financial questions, so it is conceivable that his functions will be in the international political sphere, rather than in the domestic, financial, or economic sphere. ’
