MR J. BADDELEY’S FAREWELL AT RUNANGA

■Friends and the members and supporters of sports bodies in ' the district gathered in the Fire Brigade hall at Runanga to bid farewell to Mr Jack Baddeley on the eve of his departure from the district, and to pay tribute' to his notable part in sporting activities. Speakers testified that he took rank with the finest sportsmen to have represented the West Coast, poining out that- his marked , versatility had gained him well deserved honours in table tennis, at which-he is Greymouth champion; in cricket in which he has represented the West Coast; and in lawn tennis in which he N triple title-holder. His departure will be keenly felt in Runanga where he has been 'a leading light in sporting activities. On behalf of the Runanga Tennis Club, Mr S. Kennedy made eulogistic reference to Air Baddeley’s prowess and his invaluable assistance as a club member. Air R. Mitchell, representing the West Coast Tennis Association, stated encouragement had been afforded junior and inferior players because of Mr Baddeley’s unstinting help and experience. Mr W. Downes, on behalf of the West Coast Table Tennis Union wished the guest bon voyage and the best of luck in sporting arenas of the North Island. Mr W. Anderson tendered the best wishes of the Runanga Cricket Club and made reference to Mr Baddeley’s sporting attitude in counting the game beyond the prize. A presentation was made by Mr Mitchell on behalf of the associated sports bodies. In his customarily modest manner Air Baddeley briefly replied. Dancing followed, interspersed with items rendered by Miss V. McDcmnell, Miss Netta Durkin and Airs S. Spark. The evening was brought to a conclusion with three hearty cheers for the departing truest.
