MANY U.S. MINERS FAIL TO RETURN TO WORK

NEW YORK, April 13. Nearly 3000 miners at three large “captive” pits and one big commercial operation in Western Pennsylvania failed to report for work this morning, despite the settlement of the pension dispute. It is thought the miners may have decided - to wait and see what happens to Mr John L. Lewis, head of their union, in the court contempt hearing on Wednesday before resuming work. In addition to the mines in Western Pennsylvania, virtually all the mines in Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee are still idle. Over 12,000 anthracite miners, about one-third the number who walked out last week in sympathy with the soft-coal strike returned to work in Pennsylvania to-day.
