CALWELL SPEEDS UP IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA GREATLY

CANBERRA. April 13. Hon. A. A. Calwell, Minister of Immigration, stated: "The flow of British immigrants to Australia is now 25 times as great as a year ago.” He added that nearly 500,000 tons of shipping was in sight in the immigration scheme, and that by the end of the; year there would be .21 ships, totalling 360 292 tons in service to bring immigrants from' the United Kingdom. n , Of these ships, eight -would be exclusively for the carriage of migrants. The fleet would be augmented by the Orcades and the Bermuda Monarch early in 1949.
