REDUCTION IN OIL FUEL FOR CONTRACT LICENSES

INVERCARGILL, April 13. An indication that, to secure a reduction in the* consumption of oil fuel, contract licenses would be reduced to a 50-mile radius, except in cases where it was shown to be impracticable, was given by No 4 Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr E. M. Arnold, at a sitting at Invercargill to-day.

The sitting was held for the purpose of reviewing all contract licenses. Mr Arnold explained that reviews were being made at the direction of the Minister of Transport. The British Government had asked fo r a reduction in the overall consumption of oil fue] by at least 10 per cent, and the purpose of the reviews was to secure a reduction ol that consumption. Mr FI. Anderson, district transport officer, Dunedin, who stated the department’s case, said the main points were to investigate the possibility, of reducing the mileage in the area operated; the possibility of reducing the frequency of trips, and the possibility of other transport, not using oil fuel. It was important that no restrictions should be imposed that would impede essential production. The decisions in the cases reviewed were reserved.
