N.Z. TIMBER INDUSTRY’S BRIGHT FUTURE
ROTORUA, April 12
Two hundred representatives ol timber and forestry interests in both Australia and New Zealand are visiting Rotorua to take part in the timber and forestry conference whici was opened by the Commissioner 01 State Forest, the Hon. G. F. Skinner) this morning. The conference is the largest of its kind ever held in the Dominion.
“Timber is the one industry in New Zealand which faces a very bright future.” said Mr Skinner .opening the conference. “We are in a country where exotic trees grow quicker than in any other part of the world and we must take advantage of new methods and developments. I do not think there has ever been a time in our history to make co-operation between members of the British Commonwealth of nations more necessary. “The bulk of our exports must be softwoods. What the figure will be I will not venture to predict. Australia should welcome exotic softwoods from New Zealand rather than America or the Baltic countries. Australia has many things which New Zealand needs. There are hardwoods and steel materials of all kinds in Australia. The obstacles are in getting machinery and shipping.”
