Interference with Scales Discovered
BLENHEIM, April 12. The discovery that the scales had been tampered with was made on the first day of the Marlborough Racine Club’s meeting on Saturday, when after the horses were on the course for the first rare, the Novice Stakes, it was found that an axe-head and several small pieces of lead had been hedged in. As a result the jockeys all carried about 5-lbs. overweight. This morning the president of the club, Mr A. F. Loe, asked if this was sufficient cause for the race to be held up, replied that if the horses had been recalled it would have meant a delay of an hour or more. “We did all we could,” he said. “There was no protest lodged within the required time.” He added that the matter would come before the Wellington District Committee in due time.
The stipendiary steward, Mr H. J. Knight, said a meeting of the judicial committee on the question of the scales had not been held until after the running of the second race when the circumstances of what had happened were considered. The matter was now being inquired into by the police, who were also inquiring into incidents alleged to have happened at Nelson. It was found there that the hurdles set for the second day had been tampered with. It is also alleged that two horses were “got at”. On one of these/' it is alleged, a hypodermic syringe was used, but subsequent veterinary evidence does not subscribe to the allegations made by the trainer concerned.
