SPORT IN BRITAIN
LONDON, April 11 With the Australian cricketers arriving this week the British sporting world may be said to be on the eve of the biggest “feast” of events ever staged in this country. A few days before the Australians play their first match—and Len Hutton freshly back from the West Indies has stated that with luck Britain has an even chance of winning the Ashes—will be Cup Final at Wembley. Then will follow, before the Olympic Games begin at the end of July The Two Thousand Guineas, the Derby. Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta, Ascot, the world’s archery championships, the world’s billiards and professional snooker championships, the Curtis Cup match against the American women golfers, and the Amateur Athletic Association chamoionships. There will also be big cycling, ice hockey, swimming, and motoring events.
Boxing will not be left out of the limelight, for three days before the start of the Olympic Games, Freddie Mills will fight Gus Lesnivich for the American world light-heavy-weight title at the White City. It is stated that this fight will be one of the biggest in the history of the British ring. Jack Solomons, who is staging it, had hoped to pack 80,000 people in, but it has been decided that the fight shall he an all-ticket affair limited to 43,77 7. There will be 1272 lOgs tickets, 12.000 between 2gs and sgs, 3802 Is and 26,524 at 10s. Mills will meet the Scottish heavyweight Ken Shaw, on April 20. _ He will then leave for South Africa to meet Johnny Ralph, South African champion at Johannesburg, on May 29.. Lesnivich and Mills last met in London in May, 1946. The referee stopped the fight in the tenth round. Bos Murphy is a disappointed man after his defeat by Mark Hart. He has no' excuses, but says that after eight months of solid work he must have been overtrained and past his peak.
