Difficulty in Obtaining Roofing Materials
The supply of roofing materials in New Zealand has reached a critical stage, as the supply from overseas sources of asbestos for New Zealandmade roofing to replace corrugated iron has failed for the time being. Permits for buildings in urban areas will especially ban the use of asbestos composition or iron roofing. In making an announcement to this effect yesterday at Greymouth, the building controller, Mr W. H. Tipping, said that there would be no attempt to interfere with permits which had already been granted for the use of asbestos roofing, but that in future such roofing would not be permitted in town areas. Thus for a few months, at least, it appears that the construction of houses on th e West Coast will be held up. However, new factories for the manufacture of roofing tiles are stated to be in the course of erection in Canterbury, and it should not be long before the output from these assists to' alleviate the situation.
