RURAL POSTAL IMPROVEMENTS
WELLINGTON, April 12. It was remarkable how far the postal services had gone into country districts, said the Postmaster-Gener-al (Mi- F. Hackett) speaking at the opening on Saturday afternoon of the new post office at Mauriceville. Mr Hackett said that nearly every village had its post office, and 44,000 persons were now served by rural deliveries. Since 1947, there had been 3000 additional rural box-holders, Mr Hackett emphasised the need, for the co-operation of all the parties concerned in arriving at the best arrangements for rural services, and in supporting mail contractors. Referring to the rural telephone service, Mr Hackett said the Government’s ultimate long-term aim was to provide a 24-hour service for all rural subscribers.
