TAIHAPE. April 7. What ciuld easily have been a serious rail accident delyaed the Wel-lington-Auckland express nearly 90 minutes on Monday night. As the train was slowly crossing the points 300 yards south of the Taihape station the first passenger car was derailed ‘and the train was stopped smartly ,by a passenger who, feeling bumps and swaying, applied the emergenc ybrake. No one was injured. Slight damage was done to the edge of the platform and the undergear of the carriage in jacking the car back on the line, and some damage to the points. The carriage remained in the yard, the. passengers finding seats in others. It is considered the derailment may have been caused by a steampipe clamp hanging too low and catching in the points, causing an obstruction to the leading bogy. Had this occurred on a viaduct or fast stretch could have caused a bad smash. *The-line was in full use today.
