SEVEN PEOPLE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
Young Shepherd Killed
P.A. GISBORNE. April 2. A young man was killed outright, and six others were injured:, main'iy by severe shock, by lightning at the Matawai Dog Trial, 47 miles from Gisborne this afternoon. The victims were:— KILLED GRAHAM HOOPER, aged about 20 years, single, a shepherd, of Motuhora. INJURED NORMAN JOHANSEN, of Mopahora. MR T. MITCHELL, Te Araka. Mrs T. MITCHELL, Te Araka. MRS R. LEGGETT, Te Araka. All have severe shock, but are recovering. Frank Thomas and Ronald Harris, both of Matawai, have minor shock. Hooper was standing on a ridge with a group of others watching the trials when he was struck by a terrific flash during a thunderstorm about 2.30 p.m. He suffered terrible injuries. The others in the group were hurled, to the ground. A district nurse attended the injured on the ground, and four were taken to her cottage for treatment. A prize dog was also killed by the flash. An inquest will be held on Saturday afternoon.
