What might have developed into a Serious fire at~the home o£ Mr WAnderson, Kilgouv was arrested the other day through the quick action o£ Messrs Rankin and Lee, who happened to be passing at the time and noticed smoke. Finding there was nobody at home, they used buckets of water quicklv to get the fire under control. Their prompt action prevented the blaze from spreading and calls for the highest commendation. me cyclonic storm which struck the town on Saturday night, left quite a lot of damage in its . wake. Many fences were blown over, while sheets o£ iron were lifted from some roofs. Those residents who were priding themselves, in their fine display of autumn flowers, rose on Sunday morning to find them all flattened. However, having had a speel of great weather since the turn of the year, wp must not forget that winter is approaching. Mr H. Heyward, or Christchurch, has been visiting his relations in Roa and Blackball.
Mr and Mrs A. Gomm, of Spreydon, and formerly of Blackball have been here on a visit to their relations, Mr and Airs T. Heyward, Main Road. On latest reports, the condition of Mr R. Mountford, Alain Road, who is an inmate of the Grey Hospital .shows a gradual improvement. Airs Day, of St Albans, Christchurch, has been . visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Albv Day, Main Road. Messrs J. Meikle, A Clark and J. P. Clark, have been spending the holidays in Christchurch.
Miss Robin, E. Keown, of Runanga. has been spending the holidays with her grandmother, Mrs E. Buchanan. About 130 guests were entertained in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Blackball on Saturday night by Mr and Mrs T. Heyward to celebrate the coming of age of their younger daughter, Doris. After a dainty home made supper was served, Mr Jack Williams proposed the toast of the guest, of the evening who cut a two-tier cake made by Mrs Honey (Cobden). Mr Heyward replied on behalf of his daughter. Musical items were rendered by Messrs Bert Heyward, T. Phillips (cornet). Jack Williams. Jack Fisher and Bob Houston songs. Dancing was enjoyed by all the music being supplied by Airs Ord, Mr T. Phillips, and Air E. Bassett. Air J. Williams was M.C. A very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of w Auld Lange Syne.” It is worthy of note that the street lighting in the village took place on the same evening this young lady was born.
Messrs Harry and Alex Bowkett, Main Road, have been spending the Easter holidays at Christchurch. Mr W. Brown, Main Road, has gone to Auckland on a short holiday. Mr W. McArthur, Main Road, has entered the Grey Hospital for treatment.
Mr W. Weir, of Philipstown, Christchurch, has been visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs W. Weir, Main Road. Mesdames C. Nicol, and G. E. Fraser, accompanied by Miss A. Brown, of Timaru, have been visiting Mrs W. Brown, Main R.oad. There is on view at present in the window of Air L. J. Kinsella’s shop, the St John's CupTvhich was won in competition lately by the local St John’s team, competing with other teams in the district. This was a very meritorious achievement and the congratulations of the community are extended to the team and their teachers.
