A stamp regarded as a philatelic rarity has come into the possession of Mr. M. R. Smith, president of the Hawke’s Bay Philatelic Society. This threepenny’ New Zealand peace stamp, contained in a sheet bought at a metropolitan post office,, lacks the customary aircraft around the central crest. The omission is the result of a printing flaw. The stamp is probably the only one of its kind in existence. That such a stamp should have found its way into circulation is unusual, as the practice is for every sheet to be scrutinised closely before leaving the postal officials. About a year ago philatelic circles were stirred by an announcement that a major flaw had been discovered in the flvepenny peace stamps. There was a double printing of .the ship Dominion Monarch on one stamp only. This stamp went as far as Western Australia before it was discovered. Mr. Smith could not give any indication of the value of the unusual threepenny stamp.
