Mr. W. Neame, licensee of the Buck’s Head Hotel, Taylorville (the license of which is being taken over by the owner, Mr. C. Senior), has taken over the Perry Range Hotel, Jacksons, from Mr. F. Fassell.

The Ngahere Hotel has been disposed of by Mr. E. Holmes to Mr. C. Cutbush, who was formerly licensee of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Dobson.

Mr J. B. Kent, M.P., is at present in Wellington to attend the caucus of the Labour Party this week.

The death has occurred at Invercargill of Judge F. O. V. Acheson, aged 60, who was elected Mayor of Riverton in November and was chairman of the Southland Regional Planning Council. He became a judge of the Native Land Court at the age of 32. He retired on superannuation in 1948.

It is stated that at the conference at Dunedin, the A.S.R.S. and Railway Tradesmen’s Association will propose the staggering of holidays to the Federation of Labour on the ground that it would enable workers to make better use of existing travel facilities. This proposal will be supported at the Labour Party conference by the' Hutt Labour Representation Committee. The New Zealand Plumbers’ Union will ask that the Labour Day holiday be moved to a more suitable date, and that all provincial anniversaries be observed on Mondays. Hutt Labour Representation Committee will ask that all statutory holidays, apart from those at Christmas and New Year should be observed on Mondays.

Fritz Holland,' the veteran boxer, who some time ago was on .the West Coast, was on Saturday recalled at Wellington by Tom Maguire, the manager for Dave Sands, who met Marr at Petone that day. Mr Maguire broadcast an appeal tor his whereabouts before the Sands-Marr tight in Wellington. Holland, who twice fought Les Darby, regarded by many as the finest middle-weight ever produced by Australia, conducted a boxing school in Christchurch for several years. Tom Maguire was a visitor to his home in Newcastle, New South Wales. Fritz Holland left Christchurch for the West Coast 12 months ago, and is believed to be prospecting for gold.

Last month 89 servicemen obtained State rental houses, making 8044 such tenancies allocated to ex-servicemen. The allocations to ex-ser icemen as at the end of February, with those for February itself shown in parentheses, were: Auckland. The Karepo arrived here yesterday for a coal cargo for Auckland, and will commence loading on Wednesday. A train-load of Buller coal arrived here today' making 16,000 tor a week. However, the Buller bar may have been rectified bv the week-end flood, so no further use of Uns port for Buller coal may be necessary. The Railway Department last week moved about 3000 ton of coal daily from Reef ton (including Buller consignments) has planned to bring five train loads of Buller coal daily, in the event of Westport bar more workable. The s.s. Kaimiro is expected her e to-morrow.

The increase of a penny a gallon in the price of petrol represents about £400,000 a year additional cost to the consumer, the greatest proportion of which will be borne by the transport industry and, in particular, bv the commercial user, said Mr E.
