A Baghdad cable stated that the death has occurred of Hamdi Pachachi. the Iraq Foreign Minister, after a heart attack.

Mr. James Byrne, of the Club Hotel staff, .Greymouth, who leaves tomorrow on an extended holiday tour of the Southern Lakes district and Dunedin, where he will attend the Centennial celebrations, was bidden farewell by a large number of friends, boarders and staff, and was presented with a suitable gift. The presentation was made by Mr. J. Ashton, on behalf of those present, and other speakers were Messrs J. Forrest, E. Bone, J. Forrest, Junr., J. Hargreaves, R. Hunt, L. Wood and L. Harris. Mr. Byrne, who is a native of Dunedin, has resided on the West Coast for the past fifty years, and this will be his first visit to his native place since he left it.

The death occurred on Saturday afternoon of Mrs Lilian May Johnston, of Barrytown, after a lengthy illness. Mrs Johnston, who was born in Brunner 53 years ago, was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Richard Parker, well-known pioneers of Brunner, and was the wife of Robert Johnston, of Barrytown. She was a member of the Barrytown Women's Institute. She is survived by her husband and four sisters, Mesdames H. Kirk, L. Poschich, G. Groom (all of Greymouth), and Mrs J-. Goodman (Motueka), also by three brothers, Herbert (Huntly), and Richard and John (Greymouth). The funeral takes place to-day, leaving Sampson’s chapel.
