MURDER CHARGE DROPPED
AUCKLAND, Feb 3.
A murder charge against a Maori youth, arising from the drowning of a three-year-old Maori girl in North Auckland, has been withdrawn oecause the accused has been certified as'an imbecile and mentally unfit to plead, said Mr Justice Finlay in his charge to the grand jury at the opening of the Supreme Court criminal session to-day. His Honour said the list of 40 indictments was not abnormal in view’ of the fact that_Lhe Auckland Sunremp Court area included one-third of the population of New Zealand. If there was anv preponderance, it was offences in the cargo pilland theft, category.
