WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. Borough Streets: WESTPORT, September 22. The celerity with which Hon. P. C. Webb introduced his rotation scheme of employment has been of great benefit to the Buller district. Men who were formerly employed undei Scheme 5 are now guaranteed at least a few months at standard rates of pay. There were no long winded discussions and after enquiries were made from the correct quarters a large number of men were employed by the Borough Council, clearing the streets and forming footpaths with the result that the thoroughfares now present a tidy appearance. The men have accomplished splendid work and is evidence that if given employment at standard rates of pay, they will give of their best. Our local Employment Officer, Mr Mitchell, must also be given a slice of the credit for the smooth way in which things are being managed in Westport. He gives every co-opera-tion to the unemployed, finds time to listen to the men’s troubles, and has cut red tape to a minimum.

Card Party: Over forty players took part in the Labour Party’s card tournament last evening and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. As a pleasant form of appeal for funds for the local branch’s activities, the functions are proving very popular and are now well established as part of the social life of the town. The eucnre award was won by Mrs E. Prout, with Mrs H. Todd and Mrs F. Woods, in second and third positions respectively. The forty-fives competition was wort by Mr Dobson." A splenaia supper and a liberal supply of the best confectionery added Io the evening’s enjoyment.

Hospital Radio Fund: Additional donations to the Hospital Radio Fund are: “Well-wisher” £l, Buller Radio Society £9 15s 7d, C. Howard 10s 6d, s.s. Canopus £2 12s, Westport Borough Council £2 2s, previously acknowledged £316 15s lid; total £332 16s.

Hockey: Mr J. Rose was in the chair at the usual meeting of the Buller Hockey Association, held in the Elite Tea Rooms last evening. Those present were Messrs H. Todd, A. Pain, W. Ferguson, R. Naylor, Misses N. Johnson, S. Stone, N. Senior and Mr P. Gillovic (secretary). It was decided that Rivals and Ramblers ladies’ teams play off in tne final for the St. John’s Cup on Thursday. The men’s fixtures for to-morrow will be: Wesley v. Athletic and Rovers v. Westport. It was decided to enquire from the associations if Buller would be eligible to compete in the McCarthy Cup competition, which is at present confined to Marlborough, Nelson and Motueka teams. It was stated that Coast would also be prepared to enter the competition which it was considered might be conducted on a similar basis to the Seddon Shield. It was decided to hold a reunion of all plaj%rs, past and present, at the conclusion of the season in the Elite Tea Rooms when trophies won during the season would be presented. Since the Crash of Tsardom:

What has taken place in Russia since the downfall of a political structure, which outlived its functions in world affairs, like many others, which will inevitably follow, will be related by Mr H. L. Evans, who visited that country as a delegate of the United Mine Workers of New Zealand, at St. James Theatre on Sunday evening next, at 8.15 o’clock. Mr Evans is a fine speaker and win tell his audience all about what he saw during his trip and what is happening in Russia since monarchial rule was given the order of the boot by the workers. Mr Evans invites all to be present and he will endeavour to answer any question regarding conditions in Russia on which persons are not too clear. The chair will be taken by Mr J. M. Robertson, Deputy Mayor.
