HARIHARI NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent!. HARIHARI, September 21. The New Zealand Road Service staff intend holding a big call here in the public hall on October. 16. It will be run on the same lines as the railway balls held at Greymouth and Hokitika just recently. I'he hall is to be decorated in the latest style. A first class orchestra has been engaged. The arrangements are in the hands of the local service drivers. There is no doubt that the number of “bobby” calves going forward from South Westland will mean a shortage of cattle in the near future. Messrs J. A. Murdoch and Ashley, of the Westland County council, paid a brief visit here on Friday last on County business. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held last Wednesday afternoon, and was well attended. The annual meeting of the InterWanganui Dairy Company, will be held at the Company’s office, Herepo on Monday afternoon. So far this season, whitebait are not coming* up the rivers in any quantity, but those who are engaged on the water’s edge are looking forward to next month being a much better one. The Wataroa School Boys’ Football team and the Girls’ Basketball team, paid a visit here at the week end to play the local boys and girls. The Wataroa boys "put it all over” the local boys, beating them by 21 to 3. The tables were turned at basketball, the local girls beating Wataroa by 10 to 6. Mr. Jim Ford, has arrived home after being on a visit to Wellington and Christchurch. Mrs. Hendrickson, is at present on a visit to Christchurch.

The carpenters engaged by the Canterbury Education Board, in charge of Mr. Hornby, the foreman, paid a visit to the local school last week and carried out some repairs to the building and desks. Mr. Jack Benhard, of the Westland County Council staff, is here at present grading the roads. Great credit is due to Jack for the way *<e carries out his work. Messrs Evans and Roberts, of Hokitika, have been in the district for the past week on business.
