HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, September 21. Nurses J. Dowling and D. Davidson, of Sunnyside, Christchurch, are nere on a holiday visit. Mrs. H. Forster and her son, Mr. D. Forster, of Wellington, and formerly of Kumara, visited here this week in the course of a motor tour of the South Island, Messrs J. Wright and B. Duncan, are here on a visit from Sunnyside, Canterbury. A colony of the weevils 'supplied by Cawthron Institute for the destruction of gorse seed, has been liberated by Mr. G. Howe (Harbour Board signalmen) on the island in the Hokitika River. It is stated that these weevils do not destroy th? growth, but only the means of regeneration. The Gael is en route from Wellington for Greymouth and Hokitika, and she will here load timber for Jackson’s Bay, where it. will be used to erect huts for the Public Works Department, which is shortly to carry out harbour construction work there. A return of 322 ozs. 11 dwts. of gold was secured last week by Rimu Flat dredge. Okarito dredge obtained 57 ozs. 4 dwts. The victim of the motor collision accident near West Melton, Canterbury, at the week-end, was Mr. J. Kulsen, of Kanieri, who sustained head injuries, and his condition in hospital is now reported as satisfactory. The level of Lake Kanieri has been raised by recent rains to within a foot of the weir, after it had fallen considerably during the dry spell. The week-end take of whitebait here was about six tins. The Westland Provincial Organisation of the New Zealand Centennial is conducting a competition in tneses on the mineralogy of the West Coast with prizes of thirty guineas and fifteen guineas. The papers of competitors will be received up to March 31, 1939. So there is plenty of time for preparation. Keen interest is being taken in the' Maori Interprovincial Challenge Rugby match next Saturday at Arahura, between the Canterbury and West Coast teams, to decide the holders of the Arepo Cup, presented by Ratana, for competition among South Island Maori provincial teams. The game will be played at 1 p.m. to enable the players and spectators to listen-in afterwards to the third test.
