SATURDAY’S GAMES. The West Coast, representatives to travel to Westport in quest df the Mawhera Cup next Saturday, took part in a trial game at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, their opponents, The Rest, winning by„ two goals to nil. Heavy showers of rain fell before half time and the game was abandoned shortly after the interval. Both goals were scored by J. Newton; Messrs Hardie and Butler umpired,., Every rule it was possible to break seemed to be disobeyed in the match between a team representing the Umpires and Hockey Association, who played the Players. An amusing game ended with the scores equal, N. Hardie and Taylor goaling for the Umpires, and J. Quinlan and T. Best for the players. CHALLENGE SHIELD. AUCKLAND’S EASY WIN. AUCKLAND, September 11. Defending the Challenge Shield against Waikato’s challenge to-day, Auckland gained an easy victory, winning by five goals to one. This was the last match of the season for the shield.
