Sittings of the Council of the University of N.Z. were continued to-day, Chancellor Professor J. MacMillan Brown presiding. The Financial Commit tee recommend ed that the Government should be asked to increase the value of University National Scholarships from £2O to £25 and boarding allowance from £3O to £35.
The Committee reported that every large increase in revenue during recent years derived from examination fees had enabled the University Council to transfer substantial sums from the general account to the scholarship account. This building up of the capital of scholarship accounts had been very valuable and it would be desirable if it could be continued until the interest from that capital was sufficient to provide for scholarship payments. It was therefore recommended that the Government should be asked to provide a further statutory grant of £2500 per annum.
A motion was carried that the University Entrance Board should be requested to consider the whole subject of matriculation and entrance scholarship examinations with reference to (1) standard, (2) syllabus, (3) system of marking, (4) accrediting by means of leaving certificates and to forward theD recommendations to the Council through the Academic Board.
The question whether the Council should be empowered to grant degrees in Theology was referred to the Committee for a report.
Dr. W. E. Collins was appointed treas urer.
