London, (undated). Oils are unchanged. The Australian Customs Bill, after an animated discussion, was read a second time in the Lords. Earl Grey feared the measure would give encouragement to protective duties ; but Viscount Canterbury explained that the Bill did not apply to foreign trade, . but would act beneficially by legitimising colonial arrangements which were now unlawful. Earl Carnarvon thought the Bill inexpedient, but would not endanger friendly relations if used wisely. Earl Belmore supported the measure. May 23. Mr Miall's motion, in the Commons, for the disestablishment of the Chinch of England, was rejected by 356 to 61. Discount, six per cent. Paris, May; 23. Goulard, Minister of the Interior, and Jules Simon, Minister of Public Instruction, have resigned, and their resignations have been accepted. The following messages are undated :— Monetary panics have occurred at Odessa and Constantinople. Prices of wool improve as the sales progress, but both Continental and Horn& manufacturing trades are dull. Money is in moderate demand. Large withdrawals of gold are expected. A semi-panic has occurred on the Stock Exchange. Wheat, firm ; tallow, unaltered ; petroleum, weaker ; sperm oil, L 96.
