The Governor has received no intimation of his successor. Further correspondence has been received from Mr Webb. Hs is still sanguine of receiving a large subsidy from the States. Princes Philip and Augustus of Saxe Coburg, cousins of the Queen, are shortly to visit the Colonies. The English cricketers are not to come. Grace alone asks LISOO and expenses. An extradition wau % ant has been framed for the removal of R. C. Evatt for larceny at Dunedin. Australian wines are attracting great notice in England. A handsome address of sympathy with Captain Logan, has been presented. The Government will, if possible take steps to prosecute Murray, of the brig Carl, for atrocities in the South Seas. Weather cold, with much rain. Sailed— Aug. 22nd, Zephyr, for Westport ; 23rd, Hokitika, for Auckland ; 25th, Maid of Erin, for Westport ; Isabella, for Auckland. Markets are active. Oats firm at 3s 4d. Sugars in demand at advanced rates. Wheat, 7s 4d to 7s Gd. Sydney, Aug. 27. Parkea has had a good reception at Bathurat. The war schooner Ethel is receiving armanent and sails immediately for Polynesia. The ketch Collingwood and schooner Restless has been wrecked. The crews were saved. In the attempt to place the steamer Saxonia on the slip the chain broke, killing the managing clerk, and injuring several others. The schooner Florence, from Lyttelton to Melbourne, lost her mainmast and sails, and has put in for repairs. The departure of the mail is postponed to Saturday. More diamonds have been found at Oberon. A new alluvial rush, near Townsville, Queensland, is causing intense excitement. The place is said be second only to Ballarat. Adelaide, Aug. 27. The overland telegraph line between Adelaide and Port Darwin was completed on Thursday. The last message was sent and reply received through in twelve seconds, and from Melbourne a reply was received to a private message in thirtyseven minutes. The line h working splendidly. Todd received numbers of congratulations. The cable is still inactive. It is expected that the current will be restored hourly. Major Warburton has been appointed leader of an exploration expedition to the westward, towards Western Australia. Biirt is to be in charge of the camels. Letters from Darwin state that there is a payable gold field if provisions were cheap.
