THE PACIFIC MAIL SERVICE.
The San Francisco World of 27th April says :-r- .:••.•- We are glad, to welcome back Mr W, V= H. Webb, the eminent shipowner, who ' returned to San ; Francisco in the Ne- . braska. Now that the Victorian Governr ment has determined to aid his line from our port, already so liberally^subsidised by the Government of New Zealand, its permanent establishment is sure. The Hawaiian Government.has also contracted for a mailjservice to Australia by these steamers, as it had already done for one. between Honolulu aud San Francisco. It only remains for the United States to do its share.. *Oh the 20th insk notice of an amendment to the Postal Appropriation Bill was given to the committee, at Washington on that subject, and it is to be hoped that the session of Congress will not terminate before some favorable action is taken. Steamships of the calibre of .." [ the Nebraska, Nevada, and Dakotah will in future be employed, and will run .every !, twenty-eight days. The great Overland route has remained open since our last issue, passengers and , mails arriving on time. Ere long we shall, have two, and a little later, three overland routes, and snow blockades will not trouble us. The Atlantic and Pacific route, on the Thirty-Fifth Parallel, will probably be- : come the favorite;; For the rest, recent action on the part. of the Central Pacific Railroad (pur en 4; of the transcontinental road), in. trying 'W 1 grab Yerba Buena . Island in bur Bay for a terminus, has disgusted our citizens, who at. this moment are expecting a delegation froni St.; Lotra, in reference to the buUding,of a new railroad from that city to 4 San Franbiscp.' St. Louis "is connected •• by a network' of railroads.with all the Atlantic' cities, and of ,i course all : this competition will bo good for the traveller by our route, in reducing ; fares and making the companies -anxious to secure passengers by eyery njeang |ft their . power, by special eflbrts'ror their, comfort, and by accelerating the speed of trains/ Mr Webb speaks in_ the. highest terms of his colonial visit ; of the wonderful progress everywhere manifest, and of the hospitality with which lie was universally received." . / *
