THE REVOLUTION IN SPAIN.
• The Carlist bands areincreasingthrouohout the kingdom. They cry, "Viva Carlos ; the Seven th !" " Death to the Liberals !" i Many arrests have been made. Many of I the peasants in the: provinces of Lavarre Ouippuzcoj Teruel, Leon, and Hubsca! have joined the forces of the Pretender! The Government is taking active measures to suppress theni. A Madrid despatch of April 24 says that on the Cortes re-assembling, the Carlist, Deputies observed the: request of ' Don Carlos not to take their seats. ;2000 Cariists are concentrated at Navarre, arid 200 in the neighborhood of Bilboa. The 1
bands in La Mancha and Andalusia are insignificant. A Paris despatch dated April 24 says : —Advices from the Spanish frontier state that the Cariists have been victorious, and captured carbineers in two recent engagements with the Government troops near Biiboa, Biscay. The Pairie denies that General Catheliniare is with Carlos. It says that he is still here, and will not join the present movement in Spain. Evening; It is believed here that the impending struggle between. the .Government and the Carlista in Spain will be severe. It is estimated that 10,000 insurgents are iri the field. Don Carlos' wife accompanies him. The recent 'arrest of Alphonso at Marseilles was the result of a pre-arranged plan of the Cariists. The French Government has placed a cordon of troops along the frontier to arrest any Spanish refugees found on French soil. : :- A Madrid despatch of the 24th April says : — A, Royal proclamation has been issued declaring the provinces of Navarre, Lerida, and Biscay in a state ; of siege. Reports of the movements of the Cariists in their provinces are contradictory, some saying that while avoiding open engagements they harass the Government troops by inarches, countermarches, ' and ambuscades. Reports to the .Minister of War declare that the troop 3 are disposing of the Carlists. . . A Paris despatch of the 25th April says :— The Spanish mails have not arrived to-day. The Univers and Liberte announce that Carlos has crossed the frontier, and is now in Spain at the' head of 10,000 men.. The Bame journals say that a perfect understanding exists between the Cariists and Republicans. , The former are to. draw the troops into the country,. lay towns defenceless, whilst the Republicans are to rise against the Government on the Ist of May in all parts of Spain. Only two Isabellist Generals have yet, joined the insurrection.. The French Legitimists hold aloof.
