EARTHQUAKES IN CALIFORNIA.

Reports from Lone. Pine, .;. California, state that town to be in ruins. three people. were killed, and about thirty wounded. Five hundred heavy shocks occurred in thiiiy hours, and about fifty houses were shaken down. About 2.30 a.m. the inhabitants, of -Lose Pink; were awakened by a loud explos,iou, followed, by a terrific upheaval and shaking ?pt the earth from north to south. In .an instant the whole town was' in ruing, not a building being left standing. The scene which . ensued beggars description. Screams and "■ groans rent the air , in all directions, , Nearly the whole populace of the town was biiried beneath the ruins ; cries for help 1 "and" screams of pain from the wounded filled the air;" while frpfo the ruins those who escaped were calling for . help to rescue fathers, brothers, 'wives, and children, in agonising tones,. The first shock was followed in quick succession by three others. '^Over three hundred distinct shocks were felt beJbweeq halt-past two and sunrise ; in fact, the earth was in a constant shake and tremble for over three hours. A chasm; was opened extending thirty-five miles down - the valley, ranging from 'three "inches to forty feet in width. Bocks were torn from their places and rolled down into. the valley.
