Speeches were < made on opening land for gold prospecting. ( Dunedin, April 17. The funeral of Janverin, -who was drowned on Sunday last, was attended . by 400 people. A. ball will be given to the officers of the H.M.S. Rosario to-morrow evening. Mr Brogden and Mr Henderson have arrived. Auckland, April 16. Rich gold discoveries have been made in the southern part of the Province. Rewi has returned from Tuhua,and has proved the truth of the report. It is announced to be an old discovery. There is considerable commotion amongst the Natives in consequence. Topini insists upon Europeans being allowed to work the new gold field. Rewi wants the Natives to submit the question to the King. Gold is found at Tarugaraotu, a < branch of the Ungarue, {a hundred mile 3 j north of the southern boundary, Auckland. Auckland, April 17. At the annual licensing meeting, a petition with 2600 signatures protested against the granting of licenses. All new licences have been refused, and several j old ones cancelled. The commission of inquiry into the case of the ship England was commenced to-day with closed doora. Captain Harrington's evidence lasted all day.
