A fire occurred in San Francisco on September 23rd, which destroyed the wholesale stores of Preddington. Hastles and Co., and another in Harpendiary's block ; total loss, near a million dollars. A fire in Chicago, on October 7, burnt over seven blocks ; loss, 500,000d01. October 8. A second fire in Chicago destroyed 10,000 buildings; loss, 150,000,000d01. All the business part of the city is destroyed, and 100,000 people-are homeless. Fires in forests north of Michigan, Wisconsin, and lowa destroyed millions of dollars worth of property, and many lives were lost. At Pensauka, Wisconsin, thirty lives were lost, and the whole town is burnt. Prince Alexis is expected with a fleet at New York this week, aud proceeds hence overland to Washington and San Francisco. Subscriptions in aid of the Chicago sufferers at the Merchant Exchange in San Francisco are coming in at the rate of 500 dollars a minute. The prisoners in the Nevada State prison at Carsons made a desperate attempt to escape, and wounded nearly the entire guard. Twenty escaped to the mountains ; were re-captured, and the rest shot. . . The Dacotah received new boilers at New York and other alterations. She will be ready for sea by Christmas, and is expected to prove the fastest boat.
