ABE'S GULLY.
This is becoming the most important part of the district. Another new store has been opened in it, two hotels are in course of erection, and there are now two butcher's shops. The first party in the creek — Owen Williams and Co. — have a tail-race 1000 ft long. They are at present working from a shaft about 20ft deep. The adjoining parties, Frank Oilier and Co. and Ree3, Thomas and Co., took in their tunnel together to Ollier's claim ; it was then continued through Ollier's ground to Thomas and party's claim, and both parties are working good ground. The washdirt is 4ft thick, and I have been informed that the claims on this lead are averaging LlO per man per week. Walter Irving's party are workingin the creek near the junction of Pinchgnt. This is considered the best claim in the place. Frank Peel and party and Chris. Hindle and party are ground sluicing and tunneling in Pinehgut. There is only one other party, Forrest and Co, at work here. Jackson and Dempsey are sluicing in the creek above Pinchgnt, and higher up Whitnell's and three or four othei parties are sluicing the old ground. In the left hand branch of Abe's Creek, or German Gully as it is sometimes called, there are are about thirty men at work. Several shares have been sold in this creek lately at apparently high prices, but the nature of the ground, which will pay wages for an almost unlimited time, justifies the expenditure. An application for protection for a tail-race to be taken in to rew ground at the head of this creek has been made by Flanagan's party. The result of this party's work is waited for anxiously, because if they succeed in striking payable gold it will be the means of opening a considerable tract of new ground. Over the range, at Maori Gully No. 2, Askan and Co., Walsh and Co., Wylie aud Co., Sharp and Co., Campbell and Co., and other parties are at work. There are also parties working in the numerous creeks and gnllies on the Arnold fall of the range ; Portuguese, Candlelight, Cariboo, Greeks No. 1 and 2, Victoria, Shear's, Piper's, and several other gullies all support a few parties, but water is scarce at present, and without it very little can be done. There are four parties working on Stewart's Terrace, and Ryan and party are working on the Saddle of Maori Gully, the highest point in the district. The population of Abe's Gully and its tributaries is about 250. Passing through Monument Creek, a tributary of Abe's, Aberdeen Terrace) lately the scene of a large rush, is reached. Monument Creek is so naned in consequence of a life-size statue which some genius has sculptured out of a block of the j solid rock. It is apparently keeping sentry near the mouth of Louis Montandon's tunnel, and it has been supposed to represent different Dlustrious personages, at different times. At one time it was supposed to be a striking likeness of Burgess ; then it was Te Kooti or Titokowaru; and, from a French point of view, now it is the Count You Bilmarck, and if that astute and illustrious individual bears any resemblance to this work of art, his best friends cannot call him good-looking.
