A GRIEVANCE.
[to the editor.] Sir — Being a resident and purchaser of an allotment of land on Antonio's Flat, and after having built a house, cleared and fenced in a portion thereof, Mr Hamilton Gilmer comes down with a lawyer's letter to-day for LIOO damages, and clear off. Now as I had sent a petition to the Nelson Government, Warden Whitefoord advised me this morning to withdraw it, and if I would he would recommend compensation. I was to state to him the lowest amount I would take to give up possession ; he likewise said my claim was against Mr Lowe, not the Government. By his suggestion I brought Mr Gilmer over to Cobden, when Mr Whitefoord plainly said that if I would not give Mr Gilmer L6O as his claim he would to-mor-row (this day) telegraph that no corapensatinn be given me. Now, Mr Editor, what do you think of the above procedure in the 19th century, of the chief Government official of the Nelson South-West Gold Fields, and one of the principal residents of your own town ? I am, &c, William Thurogood. '
