GREY VALLEY HOSPITAL.

(by our own reporter.) A meeting of the Grey Valley Hospital Committee was held at M'Kenna's Hotel, Ahaura, on Tuesday evening. Present — Mr W. Morris (in the chair), Messrs John Hamilton (Gilmer), M'Kenna, Maurice Doolen, E. Fraser, and Davies (hon. sec.) The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The meeting was called principally to arrange the plan on which it would be best to raise subscriptions, but in the r course of the discussion on the subject it was suggested that as the Provincial Council is now sitting, and as it is likely it will not continue in session longer than two or three weeks, there was a possibility of that body voting the subsidy for hospital purposes to the Greymouth Hospital, in which case the new hospital committee need not expect to receive anything from the Government for another year. Accordingly it was moved by Mr M'Kenna, and seconded by Mr Maurice Doolen, "That a petition be drawn up and forwarded to the Provincial Council, praying that body to leave the vote for hospital purposes open until this committee could satisfy the Government that a sum of money, which would be reason- j ably sufficient to initiate the movement, could be collected in the district." It was mentioned incidentally that Mr Whitefoord had promised the committee, on the part of the Government, a sum of money equal to L 2 for every Ll subscribed by the public. The motion was carried, but as immediate action is imperative, the hon. secretary was requested to telegraph at once to Messrs Mackley and Franklyn, at Nelson, informing those gentleman that the petition is being prepared, and requesting them to have the vote for hospital purposes postponed, if possible, until the petition would reach the House. It was moved by Mr Hamilton, and seconded by Mr Fbaser: "That Mr H. Hayden be requested to canvass the several mining districts for subscriptions." This was agreed to. Mr Hayden consented to act as requested at the different mining centres, with the exception of Moonlight, with which place he said he was unacquainted. It was resolved that Mr Charles Harvell be v requested to canvaßS the Moonlight district. After giving the hon. secretary authority to have handbills and cards printed and distributed, and disposing of other routine business the committee separated, but not before nearly LIOO were subscribed in the room. It was arranged that members of the committee should hold meetings at the several digging townships, and lay the subject before the miners, and, in accordance with this arrangement a public meeting will be called at Napoleon on Saturday next, when members of the committee will be in attendance.
