At the termination of the regatta scratch sports were held at the upper end of the township for a sum of money, subscribed by Messrs Middleton, Carrol, Jones, and Clark. Thej 1 " were confined to wrestling and running, and -wevo well contested, bearing out in all fullness to the end of tlie week the initiatory games of its commencement. Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling was the first event, and this brought nine competitors to the scratch, who hugged and wrestled to the edification of onlookers with the following result :— Peat, 1 ; Stewartson, 2 ; Phillipson, 3. A 250 yards handicap flat race was the next event, and this brought nine competitors ; but Wright, fleet of foot, carried off the prize, although he gava 30 yards to some. The third event was a 200 yards handicap fiat race, which was won by Twohill, closely followed by Wright and others. Twohill had a good start. Mr Carrol's handicapping was pronounced very good, as in both races the men came in in a heap together.
