(Before M. Keogh, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness and Using Obscene Language,—Fred. Lengron for having
been drunk was fined ss. He was also charged with having made use of obscene language, within hearing of passers-by in Mackay street. Mr James Kerr stated that on Saturday night, about eleven o'clock, the defendant opened the door of his house and walked into his parlor. He was told that he had made a mistake, and asked to go out. He refused to go, raised his fist, and threatened to smash the complainant's face, and used most obscene language before his wife and family. He only went away when assistance came. The complainant now stated that he did not wish to press the charge severely against the defendant. He wished to caution others as to their conduct in Mackay street, for the respectable residents there were continually annoyed by drunk men attempting to enter, their houses, and creating disturbances in the neighborhood. The Magistrate said the worst feature of the case was the unprovoked manner in which the defendant had gone into the complainant's house, and made use of obscene language in presence of his wife and family. Drink was no excuse for the commission of any crime, and had it not been for MrKerr's intercession in his behalf, he would have inflicted a very heavy penalty. In consequence of that intercession he would only be fined LI, or seven days' imprisonment.— Donald M'Naughton admitted having been drunk, and was fined ss, or twelve hours' imprisonment.
