The following dividends haye been declared: — Bank of England, 4 per cent.; Bank of Australasia, 10 per cent.; Victorian Debentures, 114 ; Consols, 94. October 1. The Rev. Dr. Douglas has accepted the Bishopric of Bombay. Reverdy Johnson has been instructed by the American Government to settle the Alabama claims according to his discretion. The Republicans carried the Maine election by a largely increased majority. The result is considered to have strengthened General Grant's chance for the Presidency. The French Atlantic cable has been commenced. The revising barristers have disallowed female suffrage, but reserved the question for appeal, if permitted, to the courts of law. Mandrake won the Doncaster Cup. Colonel Wilson Patten succeeds the Earl of Mayo as Irish Secretary. The King of Prussia, has made a speech that is thought to be highly menacing in tone, and has caused a panic in Paris, where a strong war feeling prevails. His speech afterwards received a pacific explanation through the official press. An attempt to assassinate the Viceroy of Egypt has been made by dropping a ball into his carriage. The perpetrator is unknown. Mr Disraeli has issued an address to his constituents, in which he declares the army and navy to be in an effective state. He affirms uncompromising hostility to Mr Gladstone's Irish Church policy, which he declares is dangerous — consummating as its end Romish supremacy. The Times, in a leader, expresses surprise that the Government should hare neglected to meet the Governments of the Austrablas in the suggestions made by them for connecting Australia with India by means of a telegraphic cable, especially after the offer made by the Victorian Government alone to take the matter in hand if the Home Government would engage to provide a moiety of the subsidy.
