Owing to a pressure upon our space to-day a number of matters of local interest are withheld till our next issue. The origin of the earthquake wave which recently visited our shores is explained by the telegrams which we publish to-day. The earthquake occurred in Peru, causing a vast destruction of property^aud immense loss of life, the melanoholy details of which will be found elsewhere. The honors and emoluments attaching to the position of a member of a Road Board in Westland were very forcibly illustrated yesterday. Before the proceedings of the Grey Road Board had commenced, a bailiff entered the room with a very suspicious look about him, and bearing in his hand a bundle of those unwelcome documents known as summonses. These he distributed, with a smile and a few words of comfort, to Messrs Leach, Barnhill, ami Whall (who happened to be present), and when the chairman, Mr

Fox, arrived, and took his seat, a similar process was served on him. Thinking it j heat, perhaps, to put a bold face on the affair, Mr Fox only deigned to bestow a slight glance at the document, and enquired " Any more, Gourlay?" "Not at present, sir," Avas the bland reply, and the unwelcome visitor vanished, AVhen examined these documents appeared to be summonses, served on the members of the Road Board as formerly constituted, at the suit of Mr Rae, for timber supplied and used in the protective Avorks. These cases come off on Thursday next, and will settle the question of individual responsibility of the members of the Board for its debts. Pending the decision of the Court, Aye withhold comment. On Friday last, Colonel Kenny carried, in the Legislate Council, his motion for an address to his Excellency, praying that he may be pleased to adopt tlse necessaiy measures for calling out the first-class militia of tbe North Island for the purpose of enrolment, and the formation in each province of oue or more corps, as may be considered necessary. He explained that the provisions of the " Militia Act, ISGS," relating to exercise and training, should be enforced in a manner that Avould not put the settlers to any serious inconvenience. It Avill be seen by an announcement else, where that the Grey Coal Company are calling for tenders for the construction of the railway bridge across the Omotomoto Creek. The bridge is to be 330 feet long, 12 feet Avide, in 22 spans of 15 feet each. Tenders must be sent in to the Engineer and Manager, Mr J. Wylde, before Saturday, the 17 th inst. The latest ueAvs, received at Wellington from the Front, is to the effect that the Maoris have destroyed every house and whare north of Tangahoe, that is the district recently abandoned by troops. When his Maori Majesty heard this news, he said he had a vision, and called all Maoris to rise in October He has issued an edict to that effect. At the meeting of the Borough Council, on Thursday evening, tenders Avere accepted for the completion of the protective works near the wharf, and the Boundary street dam. No decision Avas arrived at as to the Town Clerkship, which was discussed in committee, Avitli closed doois, till past midnight. The discussion Avas adjourned till Monday evening, at 8 o'clock. Mr W. Pale was, on Thursday evening, appointed Valuator for the Borough. The performance given at the Union Theatre, on Thursday evening, for the benefi t of Mr John Black, was a great success. The house was crowded to overflowing, and the audience were not disappointed, for the pieces announced, "Cramond Brig" and " Winning a Husband," Avere carried through with much spirit. The Avhole weight of both performances fell on the shoulders of Mr Black, Mrs Newton, Mr Newton, M rs Wilson, aud Mr Wilson, all of whom sustained their parts most creditably. At the close Mr Black Avas called before the curtain, and thanked the audirnce for the support they had given him. For this evening the pieces announced are " Cramond Brig" and the " Widow's Victim."
