SALTWATER AND NEW RIVER DISTRICT.

(FROM OUB OW2f COBBESPO-NDENT.) R.UTHERGLEN, August 4. Gold 1 has been discovered in a terrace up the Cocka-Bnlla Creek, and already several claims have been taken up ; tie results, however, will not be known for the next fortnight. The locale of this discovery is about two miles south-west from the Eight-mile Terrace, and should the parties who are now tunnelling be successful in striking payable gold, there is no doubt that considerable prospecting will be carried on in the New River district. Nothing further is yet known as to how the Eight-mile Terrace is likely to turn out. It is expected that Sweeney and Co. will be able to complete their tunnel in about ten days, and the Rip-and-Tear Co. in a fortnight, and it is to be hoped that they will be fortunate enough to strike the lead! It augurs well for the value of claims on this terrace, when the prospectors claim .£647 as compensation for the loss of their tunnel, &c. Time alone will show whether the lead can be traced, and if so, it will be highly prized by many miners who have had a long spell of hard work without any adequate remuneration. It is 'reported that . one of the shareholders in the claim behind Couch and Co. sold out a few days since for £50 before any work was really* executed. This shows plainly the high opinion that is entertained by the miners generally of the prospects of the Eight-mile Terrace. "Brandy Jack " was the party who sold out, and he has now secured a claim on the Cocka-Bulla Terrace, of which I have spoken at the commencement of my present communication. As the New River district is now commanding so much, of the public attention, I intend to make a special visit to it, so that I may be the better able to speak from a personal inspection of its capabilities. I shall endeavor to time my visit so as to be there when the tunnels are finished.
