Bamfiold, J.P.’s.J Assault. Alexander Grubb pleaded guilty to having assaulted John Bale of the Now Zealand Restaurant. He had had his dinner, refused to pay for it, and struck the prosecutor, who remonstrated with him. Ho was fined £l, or in default, to be imprisoned for forty-eight hours and kept to hard labor.

Lunacy- from Drink. —Patrick Marnett, committed from Amberley, and who had been under medical treatment at Addington, was now brought up cured. He was ordered to pay 10s Gd for his maintenance while in gaol, or in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Civil Cases. —In the absence of Magistrate’s having jurisdiction, several civil cases were adjourned for a week.

LYTTELTON. Wednesday, December 20. [[Before John Ollivior, Esq., R.M.] Improper Conduct on a Railway.—. Frederick Bridegroom was charged with committing a nuisance in a railway carriage. It was proved accused committed the offence on the platform. Accused pleaded pressure of circumstances, but the Bench, having boon informed he was partially drunk, fined him 40s or seven days’ imprisonment. Prohibition Order. —Robert Johnston, described as a doctor of medicine, was, upon the application of W. A. Wood, landlord of the Albion Hotel, placed under the prohibition clause of the Licensing Act, and all publicans in Lyttelton were prohibited from supplying liquor to him. Bad Little Boys. —Three boys wore charged with stealing four iron wheels and two axles, value 30s, belonging to Messrs Cameron Bros., then in charge of Mr Flott, a shipwright. The charge was proved, and of the boy Buckley Sergeant Morice stated be had previously been convicted of petty larceny, and the boy Gardiner, he said, was a very reckless lad, and the unfortunate son of a drunken mother. Gardiner was sent to the Burnham Industrial School for three years, and Buckley to be well whipped with the birch by an officer of the gaol.

Fighting. —J. Partes and G. Willmott were charged with fighting. Willmott was discharged, and Partes fined 20s. John Beatty and John Burns were similarly charged. Burns was fined 20s, or twentyfour hours’ imprisonment; Beattie was let off.

Must Pay Up. —Robert Croton, in arrears of payment for the support of his children in the Industrial School, was sent to gaol for fourteen days. A case against Samuel Northey for a similar offence was adjourned.
