LYTTELTON REGATTA, 1883.
A meeting of the Lyttelton Regatta committee -was hold on Tuesday night. Mr S. B. Webb, just returned Mayor of the borough, wrote declining to give a cup to the regatta. The secretary was instructed to write expressing the regret of the committee, a Mayor’s Cup having been one of the special prizes at the regatta for many years past. Mr Puflett, manager for the Union Company, wrote saying the s.s. Rotorua would be placed at the use of the committee on New Year’s Day for a flagship. Should the funds admit of it, it was decided to give a trophy to the winner of the Coasters’ Sailing Race in addition to the prizes offered ; also to donate -65 to the land sports. Some doubts being expressed as to the boats eligible for the Coasters’ Race, it was decided to admit any of the bona fide trading vessels to the bays, or all vessels which enter and clear at the Customs and pay dues. Captain Anderson, of the ship Marlborough, was appointed judge. On the suggestion of Dr. Macdonald (the commodore) the secretary was asked to write to the Collector of Customs to permit the launch to follow the champion pulling events, in the capacity of a lifeboat. In the double sculls and pair-oar races it was objected that some of the clubs had used covered boats at Akaroa, and boats with breakwater boards fixed at the bow, and it was declared to be the intention of the competing clubs to object to this. An advertisement asking subscribers to pay before Saturday, 23rd inst., appears elsewhere, on which date the final meeting of the committee on finance will be held.
