SYDNEY, December 9,
The English cricketers commenced a match yesterday against Eighteen of Newcastle. When the stumps were drawn, the Home team were all out for 67, and the Englishmen had four wickets down for 130.
In the Newcastle match the scores of the Englishmen at the close of yesterday’s play were as follows : —Hon. Ivo Bligh, stumped 22; Barlow, not out 34; Mr Leslie, caught 51; Mr C. T. Studd, b 0; Mr Steel, not out 5. Total for four wickets 130. The weather was very fine during the day.

The election of a member for the Legislative Assembly for Illawarra took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Stewart by a large majority. The Hon. Jas. Watson (Colonial Treasurer) and Dr. Renwick, who were recently defeated at the elections for Young aud East Sydney constituencies respectively, were again re. jeeted.
The cricket match between the English Eleven and a local team was continued at Newcastle to-day. The first innings of the visitors closed for 217, and at the conclusion of the day’s play the home team, in their second innings, had lost one wicket for 25 runs.
