The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,130,000 quarters. The wool sales have closed; 120,000 bales were sold during the series, and 17,000 bales are held over for the next auctions. The sales terminated with good competition and with prices firmly maintained.

It has been ascertained that the damage resulting from the Wood street fire is not so groat as was at first thought. The loss is not expected to exceed one million sterling. The premises of Messrs Rylands and Sons, Limited, Manchester warehousemen ; Messrs Sargood, Son and Co., warehousemen ; and Messrs Silber and Fleming, warehousemen and manufacturers, have been completely burned down. The other promises in the block are not totally destroyed, hut Ixavo suffered serious damage. The election for the vacancy in the representation of Liverpool in the House of Commons took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Smith, Liberal, by a majority of 370 over Mr Forwood, the Conservative esndidate.

The total loss is now estimated as under a million and a quarter. Michael Davitt threatens to summon the Bight Hon. Mr Gladstone and Mr Secretary Trevellyan as witnesses for his defence. Their Royal Highnesses the Duke of Connaught and Albany attended the funeral of his Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury. There was an immense concourse of spectators. The Rev. Mr Maoonochie has resigned his living.
