At a later period of last night’s sitting in the Legislative Assembly, the adjournof the House was carried, and Mr Munro s motion for the appointment of a Select Committee to investigate the Railway administration will be treated as a vote of want of confidence in the Government. Much angry altercation occurred during last night’s debate. The Government have announced that a Board will be appointed to assess the amount of compensation to be awarded to the sufferers by the Hawthorne railway accident.

The steamship Rotomahana sailed at midnight for New Zealand.

The B. and O. Company’s s.s. Assam, with the inward Suez mail, which left London on the 3rd November, arrived at King George’s Sound this morning, two days late. SYDNEY, December 8.

The cricket match between the English Eleven and a Twenty-two of Maitland has resulted in a victory for the Englishmen in one innings, with 15 runs to spare. The following were the scores: English Eleven, first innings, 155 ; Maitland, first, 49; second, 91.

The observation of the transit of Venus, by Mr Todd, C.M.G., Postmaster General of South Australia, at Wentworth, was successful. The weather was clear, and good views of the contacts were obtained. The observations that were hoped for in this city were lost, owing to slight clouds.
