Tho budget speech, as delivered by the Treasurer last night, is considered highly satisfactory, and furnished ample evidence of the continued prosperity of the colony. Amongst the items provided for is .£150,000 for immigration. ■ It is the intention of the Government to introduce a Bill to authorise the conversion of debentures into inscribed stock.
There is nothing further with reference to the foundering of the collier Woniara, but the number of lives lost is believed to be seventeen. The weather appeared favorable when the vessel left Bulli, so that the captain was not considered to blame. The survivor, Frederickson, and a wonderful escape. After the vessel had. disappeared he managed to seize a plank, and kept himself afloat until he got hold of one of the boats, which ho succeeded in righting and placing the plank across it, and lashing it with a rope he found in the boat, made a sort of outrigger. An oar floated by, which he secured, and then steered his way into Botany Bay, where he arrived much exhausted. The Woniara was insured for .£7OOO in the Australian Alliance Company. At the opening of the new cattle yards yesterday it was stated that during the last four months Sydney had been depending upon Queensland for its meat supply. The late rains have been most beneficial. Something like four inches have fallen. The Assembly adjourned as a mark of respect for Mr Forester, and the Premier eulogised the deceased member. There are several candidates for the vacant seat.
QUEENSLAND, November 2
The Assembly voted a quarter of a million for immigration, also .£70,000 for defences, including two gunboats. The spring meeting of the National Agricultural Society opened on Wednesday, but is not in regard to number and quality of exhibits in advance of former years.
Proceedings have been instituted against Jeremiah Bolan, the well-known sweeppromoter. Four detectives attended the drawing, and seized the whole of the paraphernalia. Commodore Erskine and officers of the Nelson and Miranda have been entertained by Lord Henry Phipps at the Melbourne Club, as the representative of the Govenor. ADELAIDE, November 2. The representatives of the All-England Eleven have asked the association to play eleven men instead of fifteen, the Englishmen having had no time to practice, but the association have declined to ’alter arrangements. ,
PERTH, November 2. Chief Justice Wrendsfondly has been promoted to Fiji, and leaves shortly.
