AKAROA ITEMS.

A man named J. Smith, of Pigeon Bay, while riding at Duvauchelle’s Bay on Friday [last, was thrown from his horse, and sustained a compound fracture of the leg. He was taken to Mr S. Lees’, and brought on to the Akaroa Hospital the following morning, where he was attended to by Drs. Singleton and Eose. Heavy rain set in on Friday night, and continued most vigorously till Sunday at midday. The water-courses were taxed to the uttermost, but no damage was done. About four o’clock on Saturday afternoon a large tree came down and blocked up the bridge at Billens’. The water immediately rose to the back door, but fortunately a number of willing hands were soon on the spot, and, with the aid of axes and ropes, the obstruction was speedily removed. Everything augurs well for an abundant harvest this season. The fruit trees are breaking down with their heavy loads of fruit, and the cheesemakers never had a more glorious harvest. The feed on the hills is most luxuriant, and should the weather continue favorable, there will be a very heavy crop of grass seed. Mr R. Bayley’s new hotel is progressing favorably, a large staff of men being at work. Mr H. Citron is also putting up a handsome shop, from plans prepared by Mr Cane. These works, together with Mr J. Bates’ new shop, will make the building trade more busy than it has been for some time past. A cricket club has been formed, and a match will be played on Thursday. The Akaroa team will be captained by Mr IV. B. Tosswill. A quoit club is also being formed, twentythree members having given in their names. Active preparations are being made for the regatta on the Anniversary Day. Mr Baker’s new yacht is being put into racing trim, and should prove a fast boat. Liberal prizes arc offered, and it is hoped there will be plenty of competitors from Lyttelton and othor places. The annual Industrial and Horticultural Exhibition will bo changed this year, and will be held on New Year’s Day, instead of the 15th, as formerly.
