Same surprise was exoited here several weeks ago by the receipt of the following aablegram from Sydney:—" At a meeting jheld this evening, the Orioket Association decided not to entertain the proposed -visit of a New Zealand eleven, owing to the number of matches which bava already been made for the coming sisson." It now appears that this resolution had its origin in a letter addrdßsed by Mr Arthur M. Bealo to the secretary of New Sou'h Wales Orioket A*so. •oiatio~, and from which the following is an. -*xtraol:—"Anoklin<3, 23rd August, 1882 •' Dear Sir, —I am thinking about getting up a team to visit your city this season ; but aa several good players would be unable to ■coma without their expanses were paid, I thought I would write to you and find out what help might be expected from you. As several players would be obosen from teams several miles from Auckland, they would necessarily be required to come to Auckland for some fpraocice together, and this, of course, would mean additional ex* penae. My programme would be, if we came, to leave Auckland by the mail steamer on ( the 13th November, and arrive biak in Auckland On the sth December, We would most likely be eleven or twelve days in Sydney, iind in that time can play your leading clubs each n two days' match. You might put

tun Defore the olubs—say the University, Carlton, Albert, Warwick, and Newtown, but of oourse the olubs to be played will be left to your discretion. Find out if they would inarantee, say, £6O each. If they will do this you may depend on saeing an Auckland eleven during the time mentioned." The refreshing effrontery of the letter in question (says the Auckland "Star ") is astonishing, but it is to be regretted that the local exicketers should have been plaoed in so humiliating a position. Mr Beale was not authorised to make any negotiations on their behalf, bnt we understand that he represents a seoond- class eleven who praotised in the drill shed during the winter, and who consequently imagined that they had attained perfeotion in the art of oricket. They were mdely disturbed from their dream of infallibility by an overwhelming defeat at the hands of a team of all-comers on Saturday. And this is the team whioh proposed to represent New Zealand against Australia! No doubt the local orioket association will take the matter up, and send a letter of explanation to Sydney.
